The Story Behind The Name
My mother taught me to sew when I was 8 years old. She was our class art docent all through my elementary school years. For one of our class projects, she taught children to sew a pillow. Beforehand, she made sure I knew how to sew... I think so I would stand out ;)
She taught me to crochet when I was 15 and I started making my own scarves and headbands shortly after that. She would make scarves and beanies and wear them to high school football games and track meets that started off cold in pre-season. With orange and black yarn warming her skin, she inspired other mothers to pick up old skills of knitting or crocheting, and even got a friend to learn!
Spring of 2015, a friend asked "Could you make me a crochet top? Coachella is coming up!" After she shared her photos on social media wearing my design, I was overwhelmed by the amount of requests and interest from potential customers. I quickly decided to create a brand name, intrigued by word play. I often tell people my name spelling, and begin with "Krystle with a K" before they can make an error with the C. The initials of my full name are KRO, and I noticed "crochet with a k" begins with my initials! I took that to my advantage. The evolution of KRO-chet to Krochet by Krystle was so enlightening. Sometimes I interchange the O with a heart for fun.
My work involves both crocheting and sewing, and each one of my creations is crafted with care and exceptional attention to detail. Most of my new projects are invented late at night; I'm a night owl so that's when my brain storms the best. I take inspiration from family, friends, and my surroundings, naming pieces with respect to who or what inspired the idea. I design and write my own patterns, and if I ever used another's pattern, I credit the author. Details are important to me: I proudly attach a label to each finished piece and package it with care. These characteristics ensure authenticity in representing my shop and brand.
