Father's Day 2016

I almost got my dad a Father's Day present without crocheting him anything. ALMOST. The present would have been complete without that handmade, monogrammed beer cozy. BUT THE BEER LOOKED COLD.

It was very fun and easy to make, and I'm pretty sure my mom is now jealous and wants one for herself.

The gift was just a start to a great day celebrating fathering. We had brunch at El Torito (bottomless mimosas hayyy), along with my best friend's family. Our dads are actually twin souls who are not ashamed to love and spoil their girls :D

I guess I'll write a quick little pattern for those who need a customized gift addition. I wrote a pattern for an "R", but this will require a little bit of creativeness and artistic skill for letters other than "R". I listed the colors and yarn I used, but feel free to switch it up! See below and enjoy!

Monogrammed Beer Cozy

Materials:

  • Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Buff Fleck (main color) and Coffee (accent color)

  • 5.0mm hook

  • Scissors

  • Yarn needle

  • Stitch markers

Skills Needed:

  • Half double crochet (HDC)

  • Foundation single crochet (FSC)

  • Single crochet (SC)

Cozy:

Using main color, ch 23.

Row 1: HDC in second chain from hook. Ch 1, turn. (22 st)

Rows 2-5: HDC in back loops only across row. Ch 1, turn. (22 st)

Row 6: HDC across (through both loops) across row. Tie off and leave a long tail for sewing the ends of the cozy together later.

Monogram:

[Please keep in mind I created a pattern for a capital "R", with detailed notes for other letters throughout.]

Step 1: Switch to accent color. FSC 11 stitches. This creates the left vertical line of R starting at the bottom base. (For other letters, FSC the length or height of desired letter starting at the bottom base.)

Step 2: SC in last stitch made to turn work 90°. This creates the top left corner. (To make corners on any letters, single crochet in previous stitch to turn work 90°.)

Step 3: FSC 12 stitches and slip-stitch to the 18th stitch from the hook, also defined as the 6th stitch from the portion created in step 1. Continue with 6 FSC and tie off and leave a 20" long tail for affixing to the cozy. You have now created the upper curve and the lower "kickstand" of the R. (I made sure the bottom two "limbs" of the R were the same length, both 6 stitches long for symmetry. You may need to make your letter shaping in two parts, such as A, E, F, H, K, Q, T, X, or Y and arrange pieces to be sewn down together or connect pieces before sewing down.)

affix monogram & finish cozy:

Step 1: Use stitch markers to anchor down cozy so it doesn't shift while you sew it down. Use yarn needle and same color yarn to stitch down loosely to cozy. Once monogram letter is affixed, tie off and weave in ends. (It's important you don't stitch too tightly because the cozy has to stretch to fit over the bottle.)

Step 2: Sew cozy ends together with existing tail from main color. Tie off and weave in ends.
