Little Hats, Big Hearts

Little Hats, Big Hearts

Giving back to the community through volunteering my time and donating goods are definitely on a list of things that make me happy. Many of you may not know this (I did not give a formal post on my business page) but about 4 months ago I moved to Salt Lake City, UT for a Molecular Biology PhD program at the University of Utah. While I am not in such a position to have a lot of leisure time to volunteer or a lot of leftover money to buy things to donate, I do have my talent of gifting with yarn creations.

I LOVELOVELOVE crocheting, but I've been losing a little bit of crochet mojo as winter was approaching. Personally, I love the look of knitted beanies just as much as crocheted (sorry crochet fam) but just couldn't get into physically knitting with needles.

One day I decided to buy a hat loom set from Michael's and I've been obsessed with loom knitting beanies ever since. My first project I made from the loom was actually a fully functioning, beautiful, wearable hat! I gave it to my friend for his baby as a gift.

(Pictured to the right: SO STINKING CUTE!!)

It's rare when learning a new skill. Loom knitting is SO EASY and I don't think I'll ever get beyond casting on with real knitting (trust me, I've tried and not my forte).

Then I recently found this program where I could put my new loom set to use for realsies! The program is called Little Hats, Big Hearts, where volunteers collaborate with the American Heart Association and The Children's Heart Foundation to donate red beanies to promote and emphasize the importance of heart health. February is American Heart Month, and every baby born in a participating hospital in the month of February is going to be sent home adorned with a red handmade beanie. SO cute right?!

So here I am, looking through unpacked boxes from moving searching for any red yarn and I found a couple skeins. Loom knitting works up so quickly, basically the same speed as crocheting for a seasoned crocheter like myself.

This December, I'll be whipping these little hats up. 5 a week is my goal. I'll also be crocheting hats as well. Not all will be loom knitted.

Join me, and donate to your local participating hospitals! I'll be donating to Salt Lake City and San Diego regions. My mom is participating with me and making her hats to donate to Los Angeles region. Check the link below and find your participating region and contact the listed coordinator for more information!
